Friendship Circle

January 20th, 2009

There was a lovely start to the New Year when Chris Niven welcomed members and introduced Isabel Anderson, one of our members, who gave an interesting insight into the various oils and their use in aromatherapy. Isabel then demonstrated her skills on a number of happy volunteers. At the next meeting, the minister provided a great afternoons entertainment, playing classical, popular and Scottish music.

By the time you receive this issue of Update we will have been on a trip to India and Nepal with Dorothy Fyffe and heard of the confessions of a pet shop owner with Melanie Coleman. The remaining dates on our syllabus for this session are:

Mar 3 : History of jute in Dundee – Sandra Thompson.

Mar 17 : Open meeting – Wilma Ewart and Friends entertain.

Apr 7 : Cape Youth Care  – Margaret Iles (AGM).

Apr 21 : Coach trip to Abernyte – Liz Airth, Secretary.

Youth Group

January 10th, 2009

The Youth Group began this year with an excellent August weekend at Teen Ranch. The weather, apart from the Sunday morning, was very good, and the youngsters and leaders thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the different activities.  At the weekend, we were introduced to Bernard, a Kenyan who is involved with the setting up of Teen Ranch, Kenya. A video was shown of the proposed site of the camp – miles from anywhere – and the hopes that Teen Ranch Kenya will have the same effect on Kenyan young people as Teen Ranch Scotland has on many youngsters here. As a result, the Youth Group decided that until Christmas, any profits from the Tuck Shop will be sent to Teen Ranch Scotland for the project in Kenya.  When changed into local currency, a substantial difference will be made to the Kenyan Project.  This is in addition to the £2 per month which the Youth Group has sent to Christian Aid for the last 15 and more years.
