Panbride Youth Group

July 2nd, 2013

Youth Group restarts this year with a weekend at Teen Ranch. We have been unable to get our usual weekend, and so this year it will be the 30th August – 1st September and 12 places have been booked.

The first main meeting will be on Sunday 8th September at 7.00pm in the Panbride Hall. Part of our programme throughout the year will be looking at how we can become an Eco-Congregation of the Church of Scotland, helping the Congregational Board to keep an eye on our energy usage in our buildings and how we can become more energy efficient.

New members from S1 – S6 will be made very welcome.

End of Term Update

April 15th, 2013

The Youth Group has now finished for the summer although there was a final get together at the Ganges Restaurant on 21st April. We used to go the Bowling and Zap Zone at the Stack in Dundee and then to Pizza Hut but since the Zone closed there was nothing comparable, so it was decided that somewhere local would be good – and we all like spicy food!

Towards the end of the season, we have had a General Knowledge Quiz, a discussion about Lent and an evening about Fairtrade.

We look forward to welcoming new people to the Group when we start again in September. Thanks to everyone, Helen and Stan from the Kirk Session and parents for their support over the year.

Artist required

February 14th, 2013

Well, there was a full attendance at the Christmas Party! And we all had a very enjoyable time and also had a Christmas theme Quiz.

Since the start of the year, we have started to look at what we would want to put on a Banner to illustrate what goes on at Carnoustie Panbride. This banner hopefully will be displayed at the Big Day Out event of Angus Presbytery which is taking place on the first Saturday in May and there will be more details in the April issue of Update.

As none of the youngsters (or leaders) would consider themselves artistic, we are also looking for some help in getting the initial ideas into a form which can be transferred to the material the banner is to be made of (probably some sort of vinyl). If anyone has any skills in this area, could they please get in touch with one of the leaders?

Building Bridges – in more ways than one!

December 1st, 2012

Thanks to all those who came along for the QuizAid evening in September. It was good fun and £85 was sent to Christian Aid. Some of the older members of the group have had to leave Youth Group because of other commitments and so the numbers each week vary, but those who come along are very enthusiastic. Topics covered in recent weeks have included team building exercises – a competition between males and females as to who could build a bridge using lollipop sticks, pipe cleaners, glue, blue tack and wool. The girls won!

We also had a visit from Bobby Campbell from Edzell who in 52 years of fundraising has raised almost £500,000 for various charities. The Group gave him a donation for his latest fundraising effort – Poppy Scotland. The next event is our Christmas Party – with food – so there should be a full attendance that night!

Teen Ranch Time and More

September 10th, 2012

By the time you read this, the Youth Group will have spent an action packed weekend at Teen Ranch, at Inchture. Some of us who have been there before will have been reacquainted with “old friends” such a Mojave, Ben, Clancy and Dylan, some of the horses who have taken us through the trekking paths on the estate. It is a weekend where the leaders can also enjoy what is on offer without being involved in the planning as all the activities are organised by the Staff of Teen Ranch, including the three “Time Out” sessions when one of the leaders of Teen Ranch speaks about various aspects of the Christian Faith, preceded by some lively singing.

As we have done in the last couple of years, the Group is organising a QuizAid evening in support of Christian Aid. For almost 20 years, the Youth Group has sent £2 per month to Christian Aid from their funds and this helps Christian Aids work in some of the poorest countries of the world.

This year the event will take place on Sunday evening 16th September in Panbride Hall at 7.30pm. Come along and join in the fun (there are prizes for winners and runners up!). Donation is £2 per head or £8 for a team of 4. If you are planning to come, let us know by email ( or by adding your name to the list at the Church Door. There will also be refreshments at half time. Do come along and support our young people and Christian Aid.

Free Food, Feedback from Foreign Trips and Teen Ranch

June 13th, 2012

It’s amazing what the offer of free food will do! At the end of April, every single member of the Youth Group turned up for the Barbeque in the Manse Garden and we all had a great time. You can see the photos in the Panbride Hall. Two of the group brought along guitar and mandolin and serenaded us all, and there was much laughter as we all enjoyed the burgers on offer.

The next weekend together is Teen Ranch from 17-19th August and we are all looking forward to that. There has been an offer from the leaders of Teen Ranch saying they are willing to come along to one of our Sunday evening meetings and we will be taking them up on that. Kym Anderson who returns from India later this month has also offered to come along and tell the group of her 6 months there, and hopefully Beth Telford, a former member of the group will be able to visit us after she returns from her year in Uganda.

Youth Group starts again on the first Sunday of September at 7.00pm in the Panbride Hall.

Looking Forward

April 17th, 2012

Over the last few weeks there has been discussion about price increases and how much the Group would be willing to pay for the sweets and drinks in the Tuck Shop which we related to the economic difficulties facing many people today, looked at our Carbon Footprints (the result of the Carbon survey revealed that most of us could do better!), talked about Fairtrade, friendship and had an Easter Quiz. The last meeting on 15th April was planned as a Barbeque. The next time the group will be together is at Teen Ranch in August – and thanks to everyone who came along and supported our Fund-raising Coffee morning where we raised £144 on the day with £57 coming in later.

New members, new ideas and more.

February 7th, 2012

Since the last newsletter, the coffee morning has been held to raise funds for Kym Anderson who is going to India to help in a school for 8 months and £134 was raised which was sent on to Kym. She is now in India and hopes to be able to keep in touch with the Group while she is there. Topics discussed on a Sunday evening have included Peace, a Christmas Quiz, and a session where the youngsters imagined themselves to be directing a Nativity Play and having to decide what props and characters they would need. Some interesting suggestions were made! We later had some food – and there were no left overs! We have also looked at the pros and cons of modern communication methods such as Facebook and Twitter and their relevance for the Youth Group and the Church and this too raised some interesting discussion. We have also welcomed three new youngsters to the group.

A Youth Group with Plenty to Do

December 5th, 2011

The Youth Group has had an interesting time since the beginning of September, welcoming back members and welcoming some new ones. Attendance can be a bit erratic, but then some of the youngsters are involved in a lot of other activities, including Panto rehearsals, Ballet and Band Camps. However, we have covered topics such as Leadership, Role models, Prayer, Friendship, the effects of the economic crisis and Remembrance. We also hosted a QuizAid event for Christian Aid and raised £100. By the time you read this we will have held our Coffee Morning to raise funds for Kym Anderson who left school in the summer and is going to be working with Project Trust in India teaching English to children. Leading up to the end of the year we will be having discussion time and a Christmas Event in December. We also hope to return to Teen Ranch next year.

Youth Group – Looking forward to a New Session

August 11th, 2011

By the time you read this, 16 of us will have spent a weekend at Teen Ranch enjoying activities such as Mountain Biking, Horse Riding, archery, rifle shooting and canoeing. The Group starts on the first Sunday in September at 7.00pm and we look forward to welcoming some new members. As we did last year, we are planning to take part in the National QuizAid project and this year the Quiz will be held on Sunday 18th September at 7.30pm in the Panbride Hall. The cost is £8 for a team of four or £2 each. Hopefully this year the hall will be full so that we can raise funds for Christian Aid which the Youth group have been supporting by sending a donation from their funds every month for the last 15 and more years. Come along and have a fun evening, and help support a worthwhile cause at the same time. There will be fairly traded refreshments available.
